Xbox began rolling out its October 2026 system update on October 28, pushing consoles to OS build 10.0.26100.9647. It’s a general release, not an Insider-only preview, though Microsoft is staging it, so your console may lag a friend’s by a few days. Ten features shipped, but three deserve a real explanation before you go looking for them: Mythic Achievements, higher-resolution Remote Play, and a startup animation picker.
What Are Mythic Achievements?
A Mythic Achievement isn’t a new achievement you unlock — it’s a status a game earns once you’ve completed every one of its original, base-game achievements. Xbox Wire puts it plainly: “completing all of a game’s original achievements earns you a Mythic Achievement.” Add-on or post-launch DLC achievements don’t count, so a game you 100%’d before its first expansion shipped can still qualify.
Earning Mythic status doesn’t add any extra Gamerscore — the reward is the status itself, an exclusive frame on your profile with its own unlock sound and animation. If you’d already completed a game’s full achievement list before this update existed, you get credit retroactively; you don’t need to re-earn anything. Microsoft says over 900 games are currently eligible, spanning new 2026 releases down to older titles going back to the Xbox 360 generation, and the feature was live for Insiders before this general rollout.
Higher-Resolution Remote Play: What 1440p Actually Requires
Remote Play — streaming a game from your console to a phone, tablet, or PC over the internet — can now go up to 1440p with a higher video bitrate, instead of being capped at 1080p. The requirements are easy to misread, though. You need an Xbox Series X|S with the console’s own display output set to 1440p or 4K, and the client device you’re streaming to also has to support the higher quality; the update doesn’t retroactively make an older phone or an Xbox One stream sharper just because it installed. “Up to” is doing real work in that sentence, too — it’s a ceiling your network and hardware have to actually reach, not a guarantee. If your streaming quality setting is on Auto, Remote Play picks the best resolution and bitrate your device and connection can sustain, which may land well short of 1440p on a weaker network. There’s no extra subscription or Game Pass tier required; this uses the console you already own. Microsoft first tested the feature with Xbox Insiders on the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead rings starting September 9, 2026, before including it in this general release.
If Remote Play Still Looks or Feels Off
A sharper resolution cap doesn’t fix an unstable connection, and most Remote Play complaints are still bandwidth and network problems. Microsoft’s baseline is at least 7Mbps of upload speed from your Xbox; pushing 1440p reliably needs more headroom than that, so a borderline connection is more likely to get auto-downgraded to 1080p than to show a blurry, broken 1440p stream. A wired Ethernet connection to your Xbox, or 5GHz Wi-Fi at minimum, matters more than the client device’s own connection in most households, and a closed or double NAT type is a common, invisible cause of drops even on a fast line. One limitation 1440p doesn’t change: original Xbox and Xbox 360 backward-compatible games still can’t stream through Remote Play at any resolution. If Remote Play is consistently unusable rather than just missing 1440p, Xbox Cloud Gaming — included with Game Pass Ultimate in supported regions — is a more realistic fallback than continuing to troubleshoot your home network.
Pick Your Own Startup Animation
Go to Settings > System > Startup, and you can now choose which boot-up animation plays when your console powers on, with options spanning Xbox One through the current console generation. It’s a cosmetic setting, chosen independently of any game, theme, or dashboard customization you’ve applied elsewhere, and the startup sound toggle lives on the same settings page if you want to change that too.
The Other Seven Changes, Briefly
- Disc-to-digital license portal: a native flow for converting certain legacy disc licenses the old web process no longer reaches.
- Unused local-save management: view, sort, and delete save files nothing is currently using.
- Party chat upgrades: background reliability and security work, no new chat controls.
- Dashboard customization: fade or de-emphasize the Home row in favor of your background.
- Local search: search your game library, club achievements, and your own history in one place.
- Cloud Gaming changes: cloud-played titles show in your Games section, with background downloads when conditions allow.
- Higher-resolution profile badges: sharper art, plus how and when you unlocked each one.
What Not to Assume About This Update
A few misconceptions are worth heading off. Not having these features yet doesn’t mean something’s wrong with your console — Microsoft is staging the rollout, so uneven availability is expected, not a bug. Updating also won’t make 1440p Remote Play appear if your console generation or client device doesn’t support it; there’s no setting that forces it. And Mythic Achievements aren’t a shortcut to a higher Gamerscore — the frame and animation are genuinely the entire reward.

FAQ
What is a Mythic Achievement on Xbox?
It’s a status a game earns once you’ve completed every one of its original achievements — DLC achievements don’t count. It shows as an exclusive profile frame with its own animation and awards no extra Gamerscore, and you get credit retroactively if you’d already completed a game before the feature existed.
Do I need Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for 1440p Remote Play?
No. 1440p Remote Play works through the console you already own, with no extra subscription required. You do need an Xbox Series X|S with its display set to 1440p or 4K, and a client device that also supports the higher quality.
Why don’t I have the October 2026 update yet?
Microsoft is rolling it out in stages, so some consoles get it a few days later than others even though it’s a general release, not an Insider-only preview. That delay is expected and not a sign anything is wrong with your console.
Can I stream Xbox 360 or original Xbox games with Remote Play?
No. Backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles still can’t be streamed through Remote Play at any resolution, including 1440p — that limitation hasn’t changed with this update.
