If you’ve downloaded videos for offline viewing and gone looking for them in your phone’s gallery, you won’t find them — and that’s by design, not a bug. Here’s why, and what your actual options are.
Why They’re Not in Your Gallery
Videos downloaded through YouTube’s offline feature are stored in an encrypted format inside the app itself, tied to your account and licensed for a limited period. They aren’t regular video files, so they don’t appear in Photos, Files, or any gallery app no matter how you search.
This protects the creator’s and rights holder’s content — which is precisely why YouTube can offer the feature at all. A downloadable, freely shareable file wouldn’t have been licensable.
How to Actually Watch Downloaded Videos
- Open the YouTube app — this only works in the official app, not the mobile website.
- Tap your profile icon, then Downloads.
- Your offline videos are listed there and play without an internet connection.
Note that downloads expire: the app needs to reconnect periodically (roughly every 30 days) to renew the licence, or the videos stop playing. They also disappear if you sign out or clear the app’s data.
